The Growth Institute is building a regional pipeline to educate, train, connect, and retain integrated-care professionals in rural Indiana—expanding access to competent, coordinated care throughout our communities.
Building the Workforce Our Region Needs
Rural Indiana faces shortages across healthcare, behavioral health, rehabilitation, education, and human services. Residents experience long waits, fragmented referrals, limited specialty services, and the burden of traveling outside the region for care.
At the same time, local universities educate talented future professionals every year. The opportunity is to connect their education with high-quality local training, regional employers, and meaningful community relationships—giving them a reason and a pathway to remain here.

Partner with local universities and academic programs to prepare future professionals through relevant coursework, interprofessional learning, career exposure, and faculty engagement.

Coordinate practicums, internships, clinical rotations, residencies, fellowships, and other supervised experiences across qualified regional partner sites.

Help learners build lasting relationships with supervisors, employers, professional networks, and the communities they may eventually serve.

A Shared Structure for Regional Collaboration
The Growth Institute will serve as an independent nonprofit convener and steward, bringing together organizations that currently educate, train, employ, and serve residents through separate systems.
Its work will include:
• Coordinating a regional clinical training consortium
• Expanding practicum, internship, rotation, and residency opportunities
• Developing qualified supervisors, faculty, and preceptors
• Supporting interprofessional education and team-based care
• Connecting trainees with regional employers
• Pairing supervised training with documented community needs
• Strengthening referral, navigation, and continuity across systems
• Measuring workforce retention, training quality, and community impact
The Institute will complement existing universities, providers, and employers—not replace them.

Preparing Professionals to Work Together
Community needs rarely fit within a single profession or system. The Growth Institute’s model includes medicine, nursing, advanced practice, psychology, counseling, social work, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, applied behavior analysis, rehabilitation, education, pharmacy, public health, nutrition, care coordination, and related fields.
Learners will develop the skills needed to collaborate across professional boundaries through shared case learning, consultation, coordinated referrals, care planning, simulation, and supervised service.
Training will emphasize whole-person needs, functional outcomes, prevention, cultural responsiveness, disability access, and continuity across healthcare, schools, families, and community systems.
